Bubble Letter S – How to Draw Your own Bubble S. S is the 19th letter of the alphabet and is a relatively common letter in English. Step 1
The letter S is a simple, wavy letter. Tracing it with a pencil would be good before you start. Look closely at the reference image, then type a big S normally. This will help you keep the shape of the letter consistent as we will be breaking it up into smaller parts. When it is ready, we can draw the first line of the drawing.
This will be the top point of the letter, as shown in the reference image. As you can see, it resembles the shape of a show horse twisted to face left. Once you’ve drawn it as it appears in our example, we can continue adding it in the next step.
Step 2
In this second step of the guide, we will continue the line you started in the first step. If you can do the first and second steps simultaneously, that would help everything run smoothly. This second part will extend from the top of the shape we drew in step one. It will gradually curve around and down to form the back of the S.
Our goal is to make the body as smooth and wavy as possible, so try to keep the pulling strokes as loose as possible while maintaining the shape. You’ll be in step 3 of the guide, where we’ll continue to build on what you’ve drawn so far.
Step 3
We will add much to the bubble letter S in this third step, but you can do it! In this step, we will draw the base section of the letter. The line will extend from where the other line ended and then curve again. You will then need to draw a slightly curved line to the right to form the base of the letter. If you first drew the note S with your pencil, you’ll see how this will all come together when we finish the design in the next step.
Once again, try to keep the strokes smooth and consistent to ensure the outline flows well. In the next step, we’ll finish the outline so you can start adding some interior details. When you’re ready, let’s go ahead and finish that outline!
Step 4
This is where it all comes together as we will now finish the outline of the S. Now you will see how these lines will work together to make this bubble letter! This could also be the trickiest part of the drawing, so let’s take it easy. We recommend forming from the end of the streak at the base of the S. It will curve up and then towards the center of the S, as shown in our reference image.
It will then drop down until it reaches the end of the line that ended near the top. Once you’ve made these new lines, your S outline is complete! Now is a good time to soften the contours if something looks out of place. Also, we recommend that you erase the pencil lines you drew in the first step, as we won’t need them from now on. Be careful not to accidentally erase any final lines or smear the ink while you’re at it! In the fifth step, we will start drawing some interior details.
Step 5
As good as this letter S looks, it still doesn’t look like a bubble letter. However, we will change that with just a few small details. One way to do this is to add some reflective dots to the letter. By doing this, we will imagine a light source on the upper left side of the drawing. To show that, these shapes will be drawn on the top sections of the S’s curls. The reference image will show you what it should look like if you want to recreate her look. If you want the light source to be in a different place, you can draw these oval shapes on another part of the letter. More realistic.
Then we’ll add some simple line details within the S. These line details, while simple, will go a long way in making the S look like it has volume. They will zoom in to the inside of the outlines and make it look like the letter is made out of a balloon. You could draw these details in different places if you want the letter to look more unique. Before you start coloring the image in the next step, add any details you want! These can be on the letter itself or around it. We’ll also go over some fun ways to personalize your letter after step 6.
Step 6
This is the final step in this guide, and it will be all about giving the bubble letter S some color! There are so many ways to color it so that you can get creative. In our reference image, we show you just one of the many ways you can colorize your image. You can choose any colors you like, but we’ll use green as an example for now. The letter will look too flat if you choose one color and use only one shade.
That’s why we recommend using a color gradient. Green is darker the farther away we get from the light reflections and lighter the closer we get. That makes it look like a real object that reflects light. It’s a simple trick, but it helps make the letter look more 3D. Using paint is a great way to make the colors fade in a gradient like this, which would be our top recommendation for coloring it.
